What is Digital Art?

Hi Everyone! My name is Victoria and I am a senior Business Administration major with a concentration in Management and a minor in Digital Studies. I’m excited to learn about Photoshop and what exactly digital art is over the course of the semester.

How do you define digital art?

In short, I think digital art is art that uses software to alter and even distort the image to create something completely different.

What are the defining features, advantages, and limitations that make digital art unique from other forms of visual expression?

Digital art is unique in the sense that you can create anything you want. With the help of Photoshop, and other applications, your imagination can turn into a visual that everyone can appreciate. However, there are some advantages and limitations to digital art. Some advantages are the availability to photo editing mediums and the number of tools that come with it.  Some limitations, to mediums like Photoshop, are they cannot make poor quality pictures better-as in the pixels of the image cannot be altered. In addition, there are so many tools in Photoshop, it’s hard to remember what tools are available and what each tool is used for.

Provide 3 examples of digital art that speak to your personal aesthetic and briefly describe why you chose it.

I chose this gif because it combines emotions and nature. I also like that it flows and continuous rather than choppy.

I chose this picture because I love to travel and it reminded me of the French colonizing Vietnam.

I chose this picture because Marilyn Monroe is such an icon. The way the artist created this picture with different size circles and different colors really intrigued me.
